At Conduit, we are committed to ensuring that our candidates put their best foot forward in every job search. Because we know how important resumes are, we are sharing our years of experience in resume writing with you.
We realize that resume writing can be a truly daunting process. One page or two? Education or experience first? How much detail should be included?
Resumes are a description of your personal experiences and should reflect your personal style. Use the format (one page or two; experience over education or visa versa) that you are most comfortable with. Most importantly, your resume must speak loudly and clearly about you. Prospective employers spend very little time with each resume - make yours stand out.
Regardless of which avenue you choose, resumes are important to your career and you should devote real time to creating them. To begin, put pen to paper and jot down everything about your professional history, elaborating on responsibilities and achievements. Next, craft the resume. Taking the information you just wrote down, use specific and dynamic language (especially action verbs), eliminate repetition and group like tasks or subjects. Remember to elaborate on the important details, always listing the most important first. It is also a good idea to maintain several versions of your resume tailored to the different positions you are pursuing. Corporate attorneys may want to also develop a deal sheet along with the resume. Click on Deal Sheets above to see sample deal sheet language.
One quick note to keep in mind -- during an interview, everything on your resume is fair game - if you can't describe it in detail, don't write about it. Interviewers know fluff when they see it.
You may have already discovered that consolidating your work experience and achievements into a page or two is no easy task. To help out, we've compiled sample language from some of the best resumes and deal sheets we've seen as a guide for you to use when developing your resume. Simply click on a practice type above.
